Welcome to A Voice Halted!

My name is Jenni Shafer.

I’m also a traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor. But since I don’t like to do things half-assed, I am also working through aphasia and verbal apraxia.

In my former life, I was a certified rehabilitation counselor. I had some idea about TBI and the associated implications, including aphasia and apraxia. But now working through my own recovery process, I see the other side – what it’s like to actually go through this.

I don’t know how many times I said to my husband, my friends, my doctors, my speech therapist – you name it – I wish there was a manual out there with what to expect (to which my husband said, “You mean like TBIs for Dummies?”).

So here’s my goal – my mission, if you will:

I intend for this site to be collaborative – I welcome your comments and your own experiences. I think we all have something to learn here – me, you, families, friends, significant others…I want to share my journey through this recovery process and want other people in similar situations to know they are not alone.

Whether you as the patient are non-verbal or can say every  word under the sun, I am writing for you. I’ve encountered a lot of stumbling blocks, but I’m learning my way around. Let me help you or anyone else who is interested in this unique and often crazy world of learning to speak again.

I’ll share new topics frequently – and if you have a question, I’ll my best to answer it.

Thank you, and enjoy.
